The wooden shingled cabin is totally off the grid. To reach the cabin is a short walk up through a small wood on a narrow winding path from the parking area. Built on stilts the cabin over looks farmland and woods with a long view down the valley to the hills of English Harbour. The cabin has a large bedroom with wooden four poster bed with mosquito net. Barn doors open onto a side balcony, an open air bathroom with rain water shower heated by solar and a full kitchen. Wonderful night skies. The cabin is called "Logwood" after one of the trees that surrounds it whose heartwood creates the only natural dye that is still used. This dye was once so valuable that apparently privateers would capture the ships that were taking this cargo to Europe. The blossom makes wonderful honey. To build Logwood we used as many recycled materials as possible. The doors and shutters are all old, many of which have been left with their original paint work. The outside is covered in wooden shingles in traditional Caribbean style. The cabin in a small clearing of trees that was just asking for a little something - selecting the spot for its view. On a hill, and built on stilts the cabin overlooks the trees down a long valley view to the back of English Harbour, about 7 miles away. We have tried to preserve this little wood, so have not made a driveway to the cottage. It is secluded, a 3 minute walk from the car parking area, through the trees up a small path. You will need a 4WD to get to the parking area: ( see the section below "Getting Around") Although the cottage looks traditional it is in fact fairly high tech ! totally independent, run only by solar energy with 24 volt lights, pumps and fridge. There is 110v power as well with USA sockets. The rain water is collected from the roof, and is heated with solar. The bedroom is large, 16 ft X 16 ft : white stained wooden floor, a double 4 poster carved wooden bed fitted with a mosquito net. There are old louvred doors barn doors that slide open to a side balcony, and shutter doors opening onto the main front balcony. All the doors and windows have mosquito screens. There is a large wardrobe with plenty of shelving and hanging space - a desk under the windows should you feel inspired to write or draw,, but still has wireless internet! Off the bedroom is the open bathroom with large rain water shower, basin and low water usage loo. Antigua is a low lying island - which in turn causes a low annual rainfall - so we need to be conscious of water usage. The Balcony is 10 ft x 24ft and forms the living and dining areas. The kitchen opens up with wide doors so the whole side is open to the balcony and the dining table is in easy reach. There is a solar run fridge with a good size freezer and 4 burner propane gas stove with oven. The kitchen has all the utensils you will need - and basic larder items. We will supply groceries for your arrival dinner and breakfast, should you feel like staying at home for your first night. The cabin has over an acre of woodland and a small garden clearing. Not very colourfully flowery I am afraid, partly because of the lack of water but I also find grasses more in keeping with a clearing in the woods. Do throw your washing up water on the plants ! There are walks nearby around the valley. I live not far away - a few minutes walk. I leave my guests alone - but am delighted if anyone wants to come and ask me questions, or have a cup of coffee. I am available on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) or my number is in the local phone. We live in a fairly remote spot about half a mile from the nearest village - usually peaceful with the sounds of nature . Thats not to say that nature is always quiet - tree frogs, crickets, neighbouring dogs and the odd donkey can be a bit of a surprise! Also, as I write this in March 2022, my neighbour is doing some land clearing to help create his farm - it seems a little development is arriving into the valley. During the day its not always as as quiet as it once was. The nearest shop is about a 5 minute drive in the village of Swetes. There are vendors along the road for vegetables, and on Friday and Saturdays places selling local food. Its about 20 minutes South to English Harbours with a good selection of restaurants and bars, and actually most shopping that you would need with a good pharmacy and small supermarkets. or North to St. Johns for big supermarkets and everything else ! Most of the beaches are about 20 + minutes along the West Coast, or East about 35 minutes to Half Moon Bay over on the East Coast. None are far away ! We are remote, half a mile from the village of Sawcolts. Sawcolts/John Hughes has a bus service, usually very early in the morning so I would say "no public transport" in easy reach. You really need a vehicle that is fairly high off the road - not a regular sedan as the old concrete public road is fairly bad and the old cobbled driveway has some raised fixed stones - a standard car bottoms out. A note : From the airport or West coast a GPS will take you on a route to the cabin via a road called "Bendals Main Road". This road is not longer passable unless you want to do some serious off roading! Please use the map I send from the airport. We have a couple of dogs who are bound to visit. They are big and friendly, but please don't let them inside the cottage or feed them or you will never get rid of them!
