The municipality is formed mostly by urban area, although it also has a rural area. Its main crops are coffee, basic grains and vegetables. There is cattle raising, pig farming and poultry farming. It has three industrial zones: Santa Elena Industrial Zone, La Laguna Plan and Merliot. There are factories of food products, plastics, metals, textiles and chemicals. The tourist sites are: Basilica of Guadalupe and the Botanical Garden of the Plan of the Lagoon. This municipality is very close to San Salvador. It has a good development in all aspects, has an approximate of 3,000 job opportunities that employ hundreds of people from other municipalities in the country, between factories and offices, as well as also has shopping centers of the most visited in the country, which are the Las Cascadas Shopping Center, La Gran Vía, Multiplaza, which are also a source of work, a recreation area for those who visit . In its urban area there are important office centers such as Torre Avante, headquarters of Avilanca El Salvador, HOLCIM El Salvador, United States Embassy in El Salvador, Radio Mil-80 101.7 FM / Radio Cadena Central 103.7 FM, Red Salvadoreña de Media (Channel 12, TuTV Channel 11 and Radio Cadena Sonora YSTG 104.5 FM), Star Motors. It should be mentioned that in the educational area this municipality has three private universities in the country: Albert Einstein University, "Dr. José Matías Delgado" University and Central American University "José Simeón Cañas", besides having several private schools including San Francisco School, American School, Augusto Walte School, German School, among others; six public schools of basic education and a national institute of secondary education.11 It also has the postgraduate campus of the Don Bosco University. In the municipality of Antiguo Cuscatlán, different festivals are celebrated, such as the Corn Festival that takes place between July and August. On the other hand, on December 12, parties are celebrated in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The patron saint festivities of the municipality are celebrated in honor of the "Holy Innocent Children" on December 28, in the Parochial Church in the Old Cuscatlán Center. In the municipality there is a House of Culture that is mainly dedicated to giving crafts courses but not crafts, indigenous culture or promotion of cultural heritage. The municipality of Antiguo Cuscatlán is famous for its various shops of pupusas, however, there are others typical dishes that are prepared here, such as the atole de elote, corn cakes, corn tamales, corn cobs and fried or salted yucca accompanied by chicharrón or pepeshcas. To the south of the city of Antiguo Cuscatlán and with an extension of 30 manzanas, is the Botanical Garden of the Plan of the Lagoon. Of that extension, 19.32 manzanas constitute a primary forest under conditions of strict reserve; 4.6 manzanas are for public use, distributed in 32 zones that house more than 3,500 plant species from all over the world; an interpretation area, cafeteria and playgrounds; and 19 manzanas that make up the La Laguna forest, which is being reforested and preserved to rehabilitate it and which in the future can be visited for scientific, educational and recreational purposes. This garden is not the work of many years. The first German immigrants who arrived here established the dairy industry, livestock and coffee. Here they settled in the mountains that border the now Plan de La Laguna and reproduced. The Deininger family began to bring trees and plants from around the world to the garden of their home, which grew enormously. With the passage of time, given the changes in residence of all of them and the inevitable urbanization of the place, the Deininger family supported the idea of protecting and conserving this wooded area that we now know as the Botanical Garden of the Laguna Plan. It was opened to the public on December 22, 1978 and since then it receives an average of 24,000 students annually. The Garden has a herbarium, a computerized data bank and a library specialized in plant taxonomy. Maintains constant exchanges with other foreign herbaria and different specialists who collaborate in the determination of samples collected in El Salvador.
